Spotlight: His Ph.D. is in Hypocrisy by Tayo Oredein

Title: His Ph.D. is in Hypocrisy … and other Poems about my Crappy Ex-Boyfriend
Author: Tayo Oredein
Series: Stand Alone (Collection of Poems)
Genre: Poetry, Memoir, Romance, Humor
Publisher: Gynarchy
Release Date: Mar 2014
Edition/Formats Available In: eBook & Print
Everyone comes into your life for a reason. And even though they may stay just long enough to break your heart, their ultimate purpose can last a lifetime.
They say everything happens for a reason, but try telling that to a young woman with a newly broken heart.
His PhD is in Hypocrisy…And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend is a memoir of sorts; a collection of poems chronicling the ups and downs, differences and the dissolution of one of my key relationships. Despite our interracial backgrounds (I'm black, he's white & Palestinian) and inter-religious upbringings (he is Muslim to my Christian), I thought we could and would end up together. But that didn't happen. The assorted poems (some short, some funny, some angry) talk about the love, frustration, and heartbreak, and the whole reflection culminated in an unexpected life lesson that surfaced on 9/11.

A Rite of Passage March ‘00
How could he share himself with so many?
His number rising exponentially
in college when he cheated on his ex
Using it as a scapegoat to deal with his feelings
and as a means to hurt her,
while pleasing himself for the moment
Perhaps there was more to his promiscuity
Maybe the notches in his belt
made up for an insecurity
by filling as many holes as he could,
somehow he was filling the one in his soul
How else could you engage in the physical act of love
with someone you hate so much
that you cringe when they speak?
That you book it out of there
the very moment after you peaked?
But maybe his intent there
was to hurt and humiliate,
To take something precious from them
and after, why not sleep with her roommate?
Being with him doesn’t mean you’re special
It doesn’t mean he likes or cares for you either
It’s not a privilege, more like a rite of passage
Making me wonder, are things really different with me
or is it just my turn to be his piece of ass

Exploding Shit Zombies by Stephen Kozeniewski
In the space of a 24-hour period, Stephen Kozeniewski was once asked: "Can zombies poop?," "Would you survive your own zompocalypse?," and "Would you be willing to reinvent the zombie yet again?" In answer to all three he is proud to present EXPLODING SHIT ZOMBIES, a story which delivers exactly what it says on the tin. Outlining the fate of the residents of Kozeniewski's current home Harrisburg, PA, this story expands the universe of his magnum opus, THE GHOUL ARCHIPELAGO.

Moira Eckhart has lost everything, including her mind. Nefarious tells the story of the unraveling of a trophy wife thrust into the zombie apocalypse, a mother with an undying love for her children, and how she will do anything to ensure those children remain cared for, despite the apocalypse unfolding beyond her mansion walls. Remember: The end of the world is not glamorous, even for the glamorous Moira Eckhart.
Set in the world of The Breadwinner Trilogy by Stevie Kopas, this short story gives the reader a harrowing glimpse into the unraveling moments of Book One’s most detestable character. “I chose the world of The Breadwinner and the character of Moira, simply because she has one of the smallest parts in the book and still left one of the biggest marks on my readers. I wanted to give them more. I wanted to deliver them the moment during the zombie apocalypse where Moira officially crosses the point of no return.” Says Kopas, of Nefarious.

Undead Britain (Surviving The Evacuation) by Frank Tayell
One by one nations fell. In Britain, the press was nationalised and broadcast the message; ‘There are no reported outbreaks in the UK’. Martial law, rationing and curfews were implemented. Charlotte and Trevor decided not to take their children on the evacuation. They thought they would be safe. When their food runs out they are forced to scavenge for scraps left behind after weeks of rationing, they find out how wrong they were. The Emergency Broadcast lied. Zombies stalk the streets of Britain. Nowhere is safe from the undead.

Welcome to Hell by Sharon Stevenson
It’s Halloween and twin demon trackers Shaun & Sarah Gallows are sent to take care of a vampire problem in White Oaks. It’s a busy Friday night and Shaun would rather be sleeping, but there’s no rest for the wicked when Sarah’s in charge.

This story is set before the first novel in my Gallows modern fantasy series and follows the twins on their first job after Shaun’s near fatal encounter with a vicious pack of wolves. I wanted to write it as an introduction to the characters for those who haven’t met them and as a little extra adventure for those who have.

Book Spotlight: Protecting Caroline by: Susan Stoker

Title: Protecting Caroline

Series: SEAL of Protection #1

Author: Susan Stoker

Published: September 8th, 2014

Word Count: 62,000

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Content Warning: Violence

Age Recommendation: 18+

Synopsis: **Protecting Caroline is a stand-alone love story. It is Book 1 in the SEAL of Protection Series**

Matthew “Wolf” Steel hated flying commercial. Luckily his job as a Navy SEAL meant he didn’t have to do it very often. He’d been unlucky enough to be assigned a middle seat on the cramped jet, but fortunately for him, the woman next to him was willing to switch seats with him. Hoping for a relaxing flight, Wolf was pleasantly surprised at the good conversation and sense of humor the woman had as they flew 36,000 feet over the countryside.

When Caroline boarded the plane to Virginia to move across the country for her new job she never expected to be seated next to the hottest guy she’d ever seen. She also never expected he’d be so easy to talk to. She knew he’d never be interested in talking to her if he hadn’t been trapped in the seat next to her, but it was a nice way to spend a long plane ride.

Neither Wolf nor Caroline were prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

Start the SEAL of Protection Series with Caroline and Wolf’s story.

About the Author
Susan Stoker has a heart as big as the state of Texas where she lives but this all American girl has also spent the last fourteen years living in Missouri, California, Colorado, and Indiana. She is quite the romantic and even met the love of her life on “Hotmail classified” before online dating and sites like even existed!

Susan has been reading romance novels since middle school and once crossed out the names of the main characters in a book and changed them to her own and to the name of her crush. She’s been writing scenes for years, developing her unique writing style.

Susan loves writing but her true passion is adopting dogs from rescue groups and shelters. Susan and her husband have had a total of nine “rescued” dogs since 2000 including a variety of basset hounds and bloodhounds. She has recently branched out and adopted a basset/terrier mix who acts more like a terrier than a basset (i.e. digging, eating a couch and being hyper).

Wolf didn’t say anything, just did what he’d desired to do the first time he saw her in the room. He reached over and gathered her into his arms. She was stiff at first, then she melted into him. She smelled of some sort of flowers. Maybe it was her shampoo, maybe it was a lotion she used, but it went straight to his head. He tightened his arms around her and Caroline lost it. She cried. She cried for being scared on the plane, she cried for being hurt, she cried remembering how alone and scared she felt in her apartment when only a thin piece of plastic kept a killer from knowing she was in the bathroom, she cried in relief that Matthew was back from his mission. Matthew rocked her and held her tight. He wasn’t used to a woman’s tears, but there was no way he was letting her go.
Finally her tears dried up and she only sniffed here and there. Wolf drew back a bit and looked at her face. She wasn’t a “cute crier”—her face was red and blotchy. She refused to raise her eyes. Wolf rubbed her cheeks with his thumbs and then lifted her chin up so Caroline had to look at him. He didn’t say anything just leaned down and touched her lips with his. It wasn’t a passionate kiss, but it felt right. It was a comforting kiss. It was exactly what she needed from him at that moment.
He pulled back and looked into her eyes. “You’re safe now. I’ll do everything in my power to make sure you stay that way.”
Caroline believed him. He was an honest to God hero. And for the moment, he was her hero. She tipped her chin up, reaching again for his lips with hers.
The second she moved, he was there. Wolf had tried to hold back with her. She was feeling vulnerable and he didn’t want to take advantage of her. But with the first touch of her lips against him, he was lost.

Book Blitz: Reliance (Hollow Hearts, Book Two) by: Christina Yother

Two strangers. One clandestine wedding. Many hidden stories. Discouraged by his limited prospects and tired of trying to find a bride in a traditional manner, Elias Wheeler places an advertisement requesting a mail-order bride and mother for his young daughter. Rebecca Malone, eager to escape an abusive past, travels to Montana to become Elias’s wife despite only exchanging a few letters. Learning to care for one another proves easy; learning to trust proves much more difficult. Elias and Rebecca must navigate the waters of blending families while learning to depend on one another with confidence, loving support, and faith. Together they must learn to rely on each other and what they hope to build while accepting that perfection isn’t the goal; love is.

Montana, 1888

Elias stood nervously waiting for the train to pull into the station. He looked down the tracks for any indication that the wait was almost over. Of course the train was running late. This, the biggest day of his life, had him pacing and constantly wiping the sweat from his palms onto his trousers. Maybe I should have dressed a little better, he thought, knowing that his everyday work clothes certainly weren’t fit to greet his future bride. But he’d run out of time this morning, and he couldn’t very well head to town in his one good suit without arousing suspicions with his family. He wanted this to be a surprise. He needed this to be a surprise for the simple fact that his family would likely try to talk him out of it. Nobody in their small town of Hollow, Montana had gone the route of taking a mail order bride, and Elias knew they would likely judge him for not finding a bride in a more traditional manner.

He had tried the traditions of courting and marriage before, with little success. He married his sweetheart Rachel when he was 20 years old out of equal parts love and obligation, and their relationship ended when she died shortly after their daughter, Lottie, was born. He later learned of Rachel’s infidelity and confirmed the fact that Lottie was not his blood child. He didn’t care one bit if she was his; he was her father and he cherished her more than anything in this world. But she needed a mother. At just eight years old, Lottie was taking on too much responsibility caring for him. Elias didn’t want her to feel obligated to take care of his needs. She needed to run and play and make her own adventures in the vast fields of their cattle ranch. She didn’t need to spend her days doing laundry or cooking his meals. She needed to learn and grow as a child was meant to do. And it was this need that drove him to look for a mail order bride.

Elias looked down the tracks again. Nothing. Several other families seemed just as anxious as he was for the train to arrive. Perhaps they had relatives coming to visit. Maybe they were waiting for a special package or shipment to arrive. He noticed that no other single men stood there waiting for the train. Of course he didn’t recognize several folks waiting on the platform, so it was possible he wasn’t the only one waiting for a woman. His small town had grown tremendously since the train set up station here just over a year ago. New people were moving into town and setting up much needed businesses. They now had a dressmaker, a tailor, a hotel, several restaurants, a feed store, and a blacksmith. Two saloons had opened as well, though Elias didn’t appreciate the types of men and women they attracted. But the town appeared to be flourishing with new people and new opportunities. They had recently completed construction on a new church, and a new schoolhouse would be built this spring. Several folks had claimed their own homesteads to try their hand at ranching. None were as successful as Elias’s cattle ranch, but he appreciated having more neighbors for fellowship and assistance.

Despite the growth of the town, Elias had minimal luck finding a bride. Most women who came to Hollow were already married and planning to settle. The ones raised here were either too young or too old to marry a widowed rancher. That didn’t leave him many options. He’d watched his brother marry his wife, Hetty, and their happiness was worthy of admiration. In the five short years they’d been together they’d grown their family with three young boys and another child on the way. They’d built a life together on a foundation of love and faith. Elias wanted the same thing…for himself and for his daughter. If the train would ever arrive maybe he could make that happen.

He didn’t expect immediate love from his soon-to-be bride. They barely knew one another, after all. But he hoped that with time their fondness for one another would grow and possibly turn into a relationship built on mutual respect and love. He prayed that would be the case. Elias reached in his pocket and took out the advertisement he’d placed last year.

Widowed rancher seeks wife to share land and home in Montana. Must be of moral character and possess a love of children.

He had received only one response from his advertisement from a young woman named Rebecca. She had written to him stating her desire to come west to settle and start a family. They had corresponded only a handful of times before he had sent her the necessary funds to travel from her home in Ohio to his home in Montana. Elias had learned she was 22, had no family, and was used to the hard work of a ranch, having been raised on a farm herself. She had described herself as rather plain, but Elias didn’t care. Rachel had been beautiful, and look where it got him. Having a wife full of beauty wasn’t important; he cared more about what was on the inside – her character, her faith, and her ability to love and accept Lottie.

Elias nearly jumped from his skin when he heard a sound in the distance. The train? he thought. He removed his hat and ran his fingers through his light brown hair. He adjusted his shirt and used his fingers to remove a bit of dust sticking to his pants. In just a few minutes his future wife would step off the train. He took a deep breath and smiled to himself. This was just the beginning.

Once upon a time in the boot of Louisiana, a young girl made a mess of things and began writing dark poetry to cope. She often found herself day dreaming, creating stories in a far away land that didn't exist and was always out of her reach. Her mission was to move on, find love and a reason to believe in the beautiful things in life. She didn't expect to be counting her blessings daily for all that she has found since then.  Her once dark poetry became colorful and bright—it became music. She found purpose and her make believe stories slowly vanished away. Her poetry also sat in the backseat as more important things took priority. However, life can catapult you in the blink of an eye. A long forgotten coping mechanism of writing would once again become her escape. This time, though, she realized that this escape where she created stories was not a curse, but a gift. Embracing her vice, she breathes life into her characters and poetically weaves together stories for readers to enjoy.  She is no longer the young girl who feared the unknown, but is stronger and has faith that beautiful things will always be in reach. She is married to her best friend, and is a mom to three beautiful daughters who are her favorite cheerleaders. She is excited to have the opportunity to share her love of writing with readers. The stories are fictional, but they are real to her. She has always felt things passionately and this new journey as an author is no different. She is no longer looking back, but looking ahead to this amazing adventure with all of you. She invites you to connect with her if you desire to do so.
