Percy Jackson for adults meets The Hunger Games with a slow burn romance between a contestant and Hades himself.
Every hundred years, the gods toy with us mere mortals.
And we let them.
The gods of myth are alive and well.
Once every century, they select a new ruler in a cutthroat competition, pushing mortal players to the limit. But this year, Hades is done sitting on the sidelines. And he’s picking a champion no one expects—in this modern mythic romantasy, she’ll fight for her life…

One of my book acquaintances gave me a recommendation for this book and she so didn't disappoint me. I was so invested that I literally had to buy the book with the pretty side to it.
Now, in the games I wanted more of a backstory. Why did the Gods decide to do this? What was the meaning behind it all? I felt a lot of things were left out.
Hades!!! I have never enjoyed a God so much before, I felt for him as a character because we all know him to be this just blah guy who deals with death. We never thought he could fall in love and have feelings.
Lyra was interesting. I mean she wasn't good enough to be a thief but; yet we find her killing it in the games. I guess just because you aren't good at one talent doesn't mean you aren't good at other things that will help you survive. For someone who has a curse of not being likable, she ends up winning people over.
Even though this is labeled as adult, I would so say it is YA and for maybe 17 on up. There is only one sex scene and that was about it.
The action was superb and left me wanting more. Towards the end of the last Crucible, I found myself wondering who was going to survive. I can't wait to dive into book two as I need to know what happens to Hades and Lyra. I need to know more about Lyra and her curse and if it is no longer? I have questions about how she has all these friends, but her curse seems to mean otherwise.
The best characters overall were the ones that literally helped out Hades to me. The banter that was given, the way they literally took care of not only him but Lyra it was the best.
