What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware’s suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Sometimes the only thing to fear…is yourself.

When reclusive writer Leonora is invited to the English countryside for a weekend away, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. But as the first night falls, revelations unfold among friends old and new, an unnerving memory shatters Leonora’s reserve, and a haunting realization creeps in: the party is not alone in the woods.

One of my coworkers has her students reading this book, and she insisted that I read it as well so we have something to discuss. I enjoyed the book and did not even think about who was behind the whole thing. I literally thought it was one person, then it made sense. Nora has been invited to an old classmate's "hen" party. She is very reluctant to go as it has been over 10 years since she has talked to Claire. With another friend going as well, Nora decides she will give it a go; it can't be too bad, right? From the get-go, you get the feeling this isn't really what Nora will want to be a part of. We have plenty of mysteries and secrets that come out to the public. I felt that Nora having the feelings she did for her past lover was weird; even though it did come out what had happened, I thought it took too long to get that answer. Ultimately, I felt Nora didn't fully come to terms with everything.

Ruth Ware grew up in Sussex, on the south coast of England. After graduating from Manchester University she moved to Paris, before settling in North London. She has worked as a waitress, a bookseller, a teacher of English as a foreign language and a press officer. She is married with two small children, and In a Dark, Dark Wood is her début thriller.
