This book can be read as a stand-alone, but if you want to have more back story with Detective D.D. Warren, you need to read the other eight books in this series. I did not know this was book nine until I was like, hmmm, interesting about something, and I had to look it up. So hence I was reading book nine! 

Anywho back to the review. We are introduced to a family who has been murdered all but one. D.D. Warren will have to hurry and solve this one as it seems more and more people are getting shot, and it may not be who she thinks it is. With the help of someone named Flora (which I believe has to be in previous books), D.D. Warren and her team will solve the case. I didn't know who it was until towards the end, and as soon as that person was named, I was like, oh snap!! Gardner did an excellent job tackling the foster care system because it is not always a good one. We hear about horror stories from foster homes, and with our system being so broken, it is always so hard to put the children in a safe environment. Our main character Roxy is an amazing young lady because she took on so much at a young age that she put her own life on the back burner. I see this character in many kids because they have to grow up to take care of their siblings or parents. I did like the letters that Roxy was writing for her assignment and that she even continued it after her teacher was concerned. I felt this was touching, and it went with what the story was trying to tell us. One thing I had to look up was pepper spray or bear spray killing someone if they inhale it....well while I looked online, it just said it could be fatal, but it affects more of those with asthma or COPD, which has me wondering did Davis have any of those to be able to have complications?
